Waterside Code Club - Easter Announcements

Easter Dojo 9th April 2026 - CANCELLED

Sadly, due to low bookings, we're cancelling the Dojo, we'll be using the time for some planning between ourselves.

Reminder from School

We've been asked to pass this reminder onto all carers and parents when on the school site:-

"Visitors to school are reminded that Smoking, Vaping, Alcohol and Drugs are prohibited in school.  Photographs may only be taken with permission from Code Club or School staff and all visitors must be escorted while on site.

In case of an emergency please comply with instructions received from the Coding Club or School staff. If you have any medical needs, for example allergies, we need to be aware off, please let us know on arrival."

ROBLOX / Internet Security

The BBC recent had this article on their website and we felt it was important to bring it to your attention:- Parents should monitor children 24/7 on Roblox, says developer - BBC News

We'll remind club members when they return in April (16th) the importance of always letting you know if they ever feel uncomfortable, to trust nothing, and to be aware of any personal details they share. There is lots of information available including Keeping children safe online | NSPCC

And a personal reminder to us adults, "if something seems too good to be true, it probably is!" ( Ask Colin for his personal experience! )

Have a great Easter break

We're back - Thursday 8th January 2025, 15:40 - 16:45

Please remember to meet us at reception

Some changes

This term we want to try a different approach and move a little away from those that just want to play games. We know that everyone like playing games, and we will allocate time as it is good to reinforce keyboard controls and strategic thinking, but we want more!

Option 1 - Own project (Mick)

If you have a project you specifically want to work on, either with one other person, please let us know and we'll do our best to help make your project some to life

Option 2 - Scratch lead group (Kate)

Ideal for beginners and those that love coding in scratch, we'll be working through pathways to gradually build up your skills and computational knowledge / ability

Option 3 - Physical computing (Terry)

Ideal for those that like experimenting including electronics, we'll be building simple circuits that gradually become more complex. Aiming to use a variety of gadgets, Micro:Bits, Raspberry Pi, Pico, Lego to create and code something interesting! Ideal for those that have some coding experience and are prepared to experiment.

Option 4 - Python GUI using Tkinter (Colin)

An experimental option for those that want to build something with a windows type interface (GUI = graphical user interface), think buttons, check boxes and you're halfway there. We'll be starting with a simple window and move onto more complex apps (calculator, task list, minesweeper and more)

We will obviously need to swap around as challenges occur, we hope that everyone will be able to help each other. We're also planning information sharing on topics of interest, along with some game playing and special one off events.

Action you can take

Have think about what you want to achieve, we'll talk to each of you and come up with some sort of plan

Show and Tell

Our next show and tell will be on Thursday 26th March, in the same style as the last one, which we thoroughly enjoyed hosting. In preparation for this event we'll be encouraging all to create something with an Easter/Holiday Theme. More details and booking arrangements to follow

Help - we need you

We're on the lookout for some additional help with our club, job spec can be found here, Code_Club_Parent_Volunteer_Recruitment_letter_A4_V9.pdf lol. No you don't need to be able to code, just have a friendly disposition and encouraging attitude. As we are in school we will need to follow their volunteer recruitment process (including and application form, references and safeguarding checks and training), please let us know if you are interested. It's fun and rewarding.

We've recently been appointed Star Club status which means we get to test new projects, have access to some special swag and occassionally receive visits from other volunteers looking to start their own club.
